With SXSW, or ‘South by Southwest’ having just wrapped up, we at Vivince decided to review the highlights from this year and also some unforgettable moments from last year’s an annual conglomerate of ‘film, interactive media, and music festivals and conferences’. For those who aren’t familiar, the ten-day festival takes place every Mid-March in Austin, Texas, and its cultural impact has actively solidified its reputation amongst festivals like Sundance. Announcements are filtering in daily, like the arrival of a massive list of films that are set to premiere.
From Bill Nye to La La Land, SXSW 2017 proved its cultural relevance by securing a multitude of celebrated “mainstream” influencers. Though it may have received backlash from some devoted indie music and film publications, it’s hard to deny the incredible affordances the festival’s access provided, especially to local and amateur creatives. Below are the most memorable moments from last year’s festival as well as one of the most outstanding experiences from SXSW 2018, Westworld:

A Conversation with Buzz Aldrin and Jeff Kluger
Buzz Aldrin is an American engineer and Astro-science pioneer known for the Apollo 11 moonwalk with colleague Neil Armstrong. Since retiring from NASA, Aldrin has devoted his life to advocating for human space exploration. Jeffrey Kluger, the Editor at Large for Time magazine and Time.com, joined Aldrin on his educational endeavor, covering the science and socio-political entanglements, making for a fascinating and informative panel.
“Baby Driver tells a music-driven story about an ace getaway driver (Ansel Elgort) who runs afoul of some really bad dudes during a heist gone wrong.” Created and directed by British filmmaker Edgar Wright, there is a cunning wit and raw optimism that makes this film a true standout from its counterparts.
